I began these social justice pieces in May of 2020 as a way to name and process all that was swirling in the air around police brutality, which leads back to slavery and colonization and economic justice and racism. And then our current prison industrial complex. I wanted to shed light on current and historic systems of oppression. Some of these pieces are specifically about one issue, but most span several themes, including race, women's rights, police brutality, slavery, childhood abuse, domestic violence, environmental justice, economic justice, colonization, white fragility and victim blaming. As I became more aware of what I didn't know, and had not had to live through, I could also identify and empathize, being a survivor of abuse and oppression, but on a personal level, not as a well organized purposeful societal construct. (except perhaps as a woman). I felt angry and also complicit. Why was I not doing more? It became very clear that not being the actual oppressor is not enough: if you stand by while oppression and abuse is happening. These pieces are part of that journey for me: to speak out. They were made quickly, with emotion, which is why I call them posters. They are not easy pieces but I hope they spark dialog.
